Irene was our tour guide for a one day tour while in Tauranga on a cruise stop. We were interested in visiting a couple of geothermal areas and Lake Rotorua. She suggested we include Waiotapu with a guided tour through an immense geothermal area, a forested area, and waterfalls. We also opted for Te Puia, another geothermal area which wasn’t nearly as large but different and Irene guided us. Following these stops we went to Lake Rotorua at a lakeside cafe for lunch. After lunch on our return to the ship, we drove through a Maori village with homes settled among active geothermal areas.
Don’t wear thin soled shoes as the ground can be quite hot in the geothermal areas. If any in your party have breathing difficulties, the sulphur emitted in the geothermal areas could be overwhelming.
Our thanks to Irene! All in all, the scenery was beautiful and the tours were a must see.
